Field Device Integration (FDI)
Introduction
FDI is a standard device integration technology. One of its core elements is the Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL) which is used to completely specify a (field) device with its parameters and behaviour. The FDI Information Model (IEC62769-5) specifies how each individual device together with the communication topology is exposed using OPC UA. The Information Model is driven largely by the Device Definitions and is based on OPC UA for Devices (DI). A secondary OPC UA model has been specified for the so-called FDI Communication Servers (IEC62769-7). Each FDI Communication Server represents a specific Fieldbus Protocol. The OPC UA Interface makes the protocol-specifics transparent to the FDI Server.

Description

Usage Considerations
Support third-party Tools that contain an FDI Client and communicate with the automation system’s FDI Server. Third-party tools may also be applications running on handheld devices.
Allow interoperation with OPC UA Clients that are not FDI-aware. Examples are HMI Clients, MES or ERP Clients.
