OPC UA is a service-oriented communication framework for the exchange of information models. It is a feature-rich standard designed to address the current and projected needs for systems integration in a large variety of application domains including for example Industrial Automation, Building Automation, Power Generation and Distribution, Oil and Gas exploration.

The functionality of an OPC UA Application is defined by the supported capabilities. Each application has to support a core set of features (required capabilities). Advanced capabilities are defined extensions of the core set of features. Support of such advanced OPC UA features assures broader applicability and a higher degree of interoperability than what can be achieved with the core set of features.

It is recommended that the support of OPC UA Capabilities is advertised by listing the corresponding capability names inside product documentation and product data sheets. By understanding the Capabilities and their significance, end-users can identify and differentiate the functionality of OPC UA Applications.
